Updated
Short answer
What it accepts
Paints, stains and varnish; solvents and thinners; pesticides and herbicides; pool chemicals; cleaners; aerosols; antifreeze and motor oil; gasoline in an approved container up to 6 gallons; mercury items; fire extinguishers; lithium and rechargeable batteries; and electronics from TVs and computers to vapes and cable boxes.
What it refuses
- Alkaline batteries; lithium-ion over 300Wh.
- Appliances other than microwaves and refrigerant units.
- Gas cylinders over 1 pound, cooking oil, fluorescent and CFL bulbs, sharps, medication, smoke detectors.
- Dried latex paint, which goes in the regular trash.
- Asbestos and other special waste, which go to the landfill by permit.
Before you go
It has its own entrance about half a mile past the main landfill gate, and staff ask for proof of Dane County residency. Schedule ahead for a large load: a full truck bed, a trailer, a packed SUV or 45 gallons or more of paint. Out-of-county households pay $75 a trip. Keep products in original containers and don't mix them.
