Mattress Removal in Madison, WI
Updated
Short answer

Madison
Mattresses are on the city's list of large items and are not on its fee list, so for homes the Streets Division collects from they go free on a work order. During the August student move-out, roving crews take mattresses and box springs in the move-out area without a work order (August 2 to the morning of August 21 in 2026). Buildings of more than 8 units are outside the regular program.
Bagging rules in the suburbs
- Fitchburg (Pellitteri, 2025): $56 each for a mattress or box spring, each in its own plastic or vinyl storage bag.
- DeForest (GFL): mattresses and box springs must be wrapped entirely in plastic, one bulk item a month.
- McFarland: mattresses accepted in the spring and fall large-item weeks in sealed waterproof bags.
- Verona: bagged mattresses go out with the included curbside bulk waste pickup.
Hauling it yourself
The Dane County Landfill at 7102 Maahic Way lists mattresses and box springs as accepted. Loads must be tied down, tarped or enclosed, and small passenger-vehicle loads unload at dumpsters near the scale house. See mattress disposal options.
