What Is Hippie Christmas in Madison?

Updated

Short answer

Hippie Christmas, also called Moving Day, is Madison's mid-August turnover: many just-off-campus apartment buildings end leases in the afternoon of August 14 and start new ones on the afternoon of August 15, according to the Wisconsin Alumni Association, and the furniture left behind ends up on the curb.

Why it happens

Property managers use the 24 hours between leases to clean and repair, so outgoing and incoming tenants move on the same day, and wobbly furniture and dated electronics stay behind. The alumni association notes that dumpster divers help cut the waste.

What the city does about it

The Streets Division runs a special move-out operation each August with daily cart pickup and roving crews; in 2026 from August 3 to 21. Even after it stopped large item collection for buildings over 8 units in 2025, the city kept the August operation. See the 2026 move-out rules.
